Molly and Ally, authors of Every Little Bit will come to your classroom or community group and read their book! This is a great time for kids to ask questions about writing, the environment, and what it means to make change. Every Little Bit highlights the importance of cleaning up our shorelines in Nova Scotia as most litter ends up in the ocean. The beautiful illustrations combined with an educational story are a great way to engage kids before a litter cleanup.
One of the objectives of Ripple is to divert as much of the marine debris collected during shoreline cleanups from landfill as we can. Our favourite way to achieve diversion is to upcycle end of life rope (and other treasures) into something new! These 60-90 minute workshops are a great way to learn about the different materials found along the coast of Nova Scotia, and make a cool keepsake!
Have an upcoming litter cleanup? Do you need supplies like buckets, grabbers, or just some information on best practices? Our lending library includes free week long rentals of litter picking supplies! Please note the Lending Library is currently only available in Halifax Regional Municipality. For bags and gloves we recommend signing up for the Great Nova Scotia Pick Me Up which provides those materials at no cost.
Ripple Environmental Education Team
Our story
Molly Foster and Ally Chant are both stewards for the environment. They met working together in environmental education at Atlantic Coastal Action Program. Later that year they both took part in the Ocean Wise Youth Ocean Bridge program, which allowed them to pursue a community oriented project. Molly and Ally decided to write a children's book - Every Little Bit, featuring a hopeful message for youth that no matter how big or small, every positive action matters.
These positive actions of environmental stewardship ripple out creating waves of change.
Acknowlegements
Special thanks to ACAP Cape Breton, and the Trashformers for providing administrative support and data. To Divert Nova Scotia for supporting us and including copies of Every Little Bit in Waste Educator tool kits. To Scotian Shores for the support, help editing, and data. To Kim from The Deanery Project for helping us with editing, and providing a quiet retreat where we were able to write the first edition of Every Little Bit.
This project is supported by Ocean Wise’s Eco-Action Accelerator program, and it has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
Every Little Bit is proof that small actions make big ripples. Due to the success of the first edition of Every Little Bit, Molly and Ally were able to establish an environmental education non-profit called Ripple. Visit our socials!
